EMC First to Market with Private Cloud File-Sync-and-Share
Today EMC announced the availability of a new online file sharing (often referred to as 'sync and share') solution that is aimed at meeting the needs of enterprises. EMC is the first single vendor to offer a comprehensive, end-to-end solution in the file-sync-and-share marketplace. The new EMC solution provides an enterprise grade file-sync-and-share infrastructure from a single vendor. It combats enterprise data leakage risks while helping organizations realize the advantages of increased productivity and collaboration that sync and share enables. EMC backs the enterprise grade moniker with their professional services and 24x7 global support. The solution combines the simplicity and scalability of Isilon scale-out storage with Syncplicity's sync and share administrative and policy control tools.
Bring your own device (BYOD) file-sync-and-sharing exploded throughout 2012. There are over forty (40) companies offering at least one product to organizations of all sizes. Over half of those companies offer a consumer grade version of their file-sync-and-share. Buyers and sellers are inquiring with DCIG about "Enterprise Dropbox" options , i.e. what to look for when selecting a solution.
Enterprises require a solution beyond the ease of use and standard capabilities of consumer grade file-sync-and-share; they require something that these public cloud solutions cannot deliver - enterprise grade security and control from a single vendor solution to mitigate enterprise data leakage.
Data leakage onto public clouds can be characterized by five (5) risks:
In a recent survey by cloudstoragestrategy.com, CIOs indicated loss of control and data availability as their greatest data leakage risks. In an effort to address the top business concerns, Isilon-Syncplicity delivers BYOD-ease-of-use combined with enterprise grade security.
BYOD-ease-of-use is achieved by publishing mobile-device applications in App Stores. For example, Syncplicity is available to all iOS users by downloading it from iTunes on their iOS device. Syncplicity supports basic file-sync-and-share and more:
The new EMC solution addresses sensitivity to data leakage. EMC provides a basic level of security, protection and control with Syncplicity. For example, Syncplicity secures an enterprise file system by natively supporting Microsoft Active Directory single sign-on. Integrating with Active Directory delivers compliance with password policies and user login audit logs. Syncplicity ensures IT controls are met. Complementing Syncplicity security, on premises Isilon storage managed by enterprise IT ensures an enterprise owns the data. Using Isilon storage raises the competitive bar higher for file-sync-and-share data availability and protection.
EMC customers receive additional security, protection and controls by way of Isilon's data protection and massive scalability. In November 2012, EMC announced the availability of Isilon OneFS 7.0. In that piece DCIG highlighted Isilon's unique data protection and security features. For example, Isilon FlexProtect provides Isilon-Synplicity unmatched availability by supporting up to four (4) storage node failures. Should a node or HDD fail, Isilon's scale-out architecture ensures all nodes participate in data reconstruction.
Enterprises are ready for an offering that leads and defines the file-sync-and-share marketplace. To achieve this, it must be BYOD friendly and enterprise ready. For enterprise buyers this means device installation and upgrading using publicly available app stores and security, protection and control features that businesses need.
The new EMC Online File Sharing solution brings these two sometimes competing priorities together the first of its kind file-sync-and-share storage system. Isilon has always had a cost-effective, scalable storage system. But now with its integration to Synplicity, Isilon rounds out mobile options so that organizations have the full suite of features that they need to confidently deploy file-sync-and-share in their environment.

Data leakage onto public clouds can be characterized by five (5) risks:
- Data availability. Employee moves data to an external system.
- Loss of control. Employee leaves an organization, but corporate data remains externally stored.
- Data loss. Employee uses external data encryption and loses the private key to decrypt.
- Data theft. Employee uses airport Wi-Fi, kiosk, or lends mobile device.
- Compliance and regulatory issues. IT cannot meet compliance mandates

- Access to native user interface optimized for your iOS, Android, Windows and Mac systems
- Share any file with anyone over text, email, or just copy a secure web link into the clipboard
- Save bandwidth when you open files - Syncplicity skips re-downloading files that haven't changed
